Artist's Comments

Hmmm. what to say about this picture, i guess their is some symbolism to it. For me when i look at this picture i think of all the homeless in NYC, or all the kids growing up in the projects of DC and BX.

I always hear people saying things like get a Job, look at these kids they are lost causes, why dont they get out of the projects....all of this help and they still stay in the same place

Then you have all the public help projects manifested through homeless shelters, that some have said is worse than prison. Public schools, which have sub standard resourses and (no disrespect to the good teachers) Shitty teachers.

I dun o when i took this picture i was trying to show the that alot things in this world try to sugar coat shit, and in respect to urban life the the mass apeall seems to be in the candy store.

note me, comment me, do something i want to see how you guys feel. It took me a while to post this cause i didn't know what to say...i hope i made sense.

Who Are You Today....Another Face Erased

I'm totally with you, roosta. This image reminds me of those in this world who are locked out, literally, from that candy store you mentioned. I'm talklng about those who fall through the cracks, lost in the "system" and labeled unjustly early in school by those crappy teachers--offered little options in life, kept out of the way as much as possible. Those in our society who don't jump on that cookie-cutter superhighway of the masses are shut out and tossed aside. The grafitti-looking paint on the box further transforms the urban-youth symbolism. I majored in Sociology in college before I came out of my shell as a graphic designer and I appreciate being educated to see the "other side"...not to judge people quickly or have unfounded assumptions...not until I've walked a mile in THEIR shoes.

Great thought-provoking image, roosta! :) (Smile)

Somebody told me once that they hated all grafitti. My response was. "What?! You think the concrete underneath is better?" Poeple get so locked into stereotypes when confronted with urban art. This is creation of people not afforded all the opportunities the fascad of society offers. It is creation from a culture that doesn't recognize the shallow concept of "ideal asthetic beauty." Ideal isn't the direction. "Ideal" has been beaten into the ground and hearded into projects to waste away and fester in the crevices of the concrete monster. Asthetic becomes anything that makes the territory scream at you. Screams of anger, hate and frustration. And to those who have managed to realize the illusion of "ungliness" as conditioned by the shiny-shoed fork-tongues, this same 'trash-art' hums a vibrant cry of revolution and the evolution it invokes. If only we all could see outside of our own little worlds.... then we might unlock the illusion that tells us sequenced concrete towers are beatiful and that the masterpiece scrawled under the overpass was not created by a genius.

Just looking at the photo in and of itself, I thought "wow...cool colors, and it's a great photo".

Then I read your comments, and it took it to a whole other level.

It's a symbol of what's wrong, and I think you summed it up perfectly. I think I'll just sit here for awhile and look at this. And lemme tell ya, I'm not gonna look at this photo the same way again.

Very good. Thought provoking. Great job.

cant say anything much that hasnt been said already here - some very good points have been made by yourself in the description and the others who have commented on this. there's a great level of symbolic depth to this photo - like the padlock represents how some are kept out of some aspects of society, and how the society that locked them out blames anything but itself for the situation. i think the graffitti art represents the "sugar coating" you were talking about.
:iconyayson:
the symbolism to me, before I read your commentary, was:

"can't get in so I'll get over"

I like yours better, but they could both apply. Nice photo.

I love this pic. I liked it when i saw it as a thumbnail but in detail lies the real "beauty". If u see how the color under the grafitti breaks and the old wood comes out it is a great contrast to the fit and powerfull metal and lock. the whole thing get a surreal touch by the grafitti...maybe i just got lost in fantasy but thats what i saw.
